Wednesday Baseball Playoff Roundup: Vincent sweeps in AHSAA play, AISA semifinals complete

Vincent used a potent attack and strong pitching to sweep Sumiton Christian 13-1 and 5-4 in a battle Class 2A of top 10 teams during the quarterfinal round of AHSAA baseball playoffs.

Top-ranked Vincent (29-6) stroked 10 hits, including 5 extra-base hits, to earn the Game 1 win while the Yellow Jackets came back from a 2-run deficit then held off fifth-ranked Sumiton Christian (24-9) in Game 2.

Aiden Poe started both games for Vincent, striking out 7 and allowing 3 hits and a run in Game 1, shortened to 5 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Poe struck out 5 and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 3 innings in Game 2.

Calvin Johnson picked up the Game 2 win in relief when the Yellow Jackets stormed back to take a 5-2 lead before Sumiton Christian’s Austin Hubbard belted a 2-run homer in the sixth inning for the final margin. Johnson struck out 6 and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 4 innings.

Casen Fields belted 2 home runs and was 4-for-4 in Game 1 and started the scoring in the first inning with a solo shot. Fields added a run-scoring single in the second and another solo homer in the fifth. He also scored 3 runs. He was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs in Game 2.

Grayson Gulde was 2-for-3 with a 2-run single and RBI-single and scored a run for Vincent in Game 2 while Ethan McEllrath had a run-scoring single.

Sumiton Christian’s Colton Glass had a run-scoring double and Rusty McDonald also doubled in Game 2.

Vincent cruised to the first game 5-inning win behind Fields and Landon Archer, who was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs while Aiden Gasaway and Poe also had double.

Reid Cornelius had the run-scoring single for Sumiton Christian.

AISA

CLASS A

Patrician 12, Hope Christian 3

Matthew Mize and Ethan Carr both homered as Patrician won Game 3 of its Class A semifinal series to advance to next week’s finals.

The Saints (17-17) will play top-ranked Lakeside School (51-5) for the championship.

Patrician pounded out 10 hits and scored 4 runs each in the first and second innings to take command. Mize was 3-for-4 with an RBI and 4 runs scored. Carr was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Bryson Wheeler was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Cash Chapman got the win for the Saints in relief. He pitched 6 innings, scattering 5 hits and not allowing a run. He struck out 6 and walked 3.

Hope, which finished with 5 hits and 5 errors, scored all 3 of its runs in the second inning. Esten Strickland was 2-for-3. Starter Cayden Slick took the loss.

The championship series will start with a doubleheader at 10 a.m. May 7 at Paterson Field. Game 3, if necessary, would be May 8 at a time to be announced.

CLASS AA

Clarke Prep 8, Macon-East 3

Max Anderson went 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs as Clarke Prep won Game 3 of its semifinal series to advance to the championship series next week in Montgomery.

The Gators (26-5) took a 4-0 lead after the first two innings and never trailed.

Gray Wilson and Camden Jones each had 2 hits for Clarke Prep. Ayden Reid drove in 2 runs. Cooper Clemons started and pitched 6.1 innings to get the win. He allowed 12 hits but just 3 runs. He struck out 3 and walked 3. B. Bradford got the final 2 outs.

Starter Thad McKinney took the loss for Macon-East (26-15). Carter Hopson, Patrick Ernst, McKinney and Bryant Grimes all had 2 hits for the Knights.
