Wayward alligator returns to Florida Air Force base for second time
Evidently, one alligator didn’t get the message after he was wrangled off a Florida Air Force base last month.
According to MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa, Fla., the 12-foot gator “returned to duty” a few days ago, spotted laying on a sidewalk near a medical building on the base.
In late April, the same gator was found on a base runway, at one point positioning itself directly under a tire of one of the base’s massive KC-135 Stratotankers. Officers with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission reported to the base and wrangled the large gator, with video showing the gator putting up quite a struggle.
Undaunted, the gator returned last week.
MacDill had fun with the gator’s return, writing in a Facebook post he had been put in charge of the base’s complaint department.
Ultimately, however, wildlife officials returned to the base and one again wrangled the stubborn gator. Although nuisance gators are often euthanized, this one enjoyed a better fate.
Wildlife personnel transported the gator about 150 miles southeast to the Gatorama park in Palmdale, where it was named “Major MacDill” in honor of his travels. Video (above) shows the alligator being released into the park.
“This grand giant of an alligator from MacDill Air Force Base was captured for a second time after first being released into the Hillsborough River and now he is making his home here at Gatorama in Palmdale,” the park posted to its Facebook page, accompanied by a video.
“Isn’t he beautiful?” the post continued, nothing the gator was measured at 12 feet, 4 inches. “We hate to see these big old bull alligator’s killed. The stories they tell must be amazing about how he survived to this length.”
The Florida state record for an alligator is 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches, according to the wildlife commission.
The park also noted it’s currently alligator breeding season, putting gators on the move.
“Be aware, give them space — they may just be passing through. And for heaven’s sake DO NOT FEED THEM!” the post read.
