‘Way to go, Alabama’: 2 singers advance to Top 20 on ‘American Idol’

After Sunday night’s Top 20 reveal, Alabama has two contenders with a shot at continuing on to the Top 14 in Monday night’s episode of “American Idol.”

In Sunday night’s super-sized episode, viewers saw the results of a round of fan voting that saw four singers cut. One of them was the Montgomery artist who goes by K-Blocks on stage. Her previous performance had been built on a typically daring song choice, Katy Perry’s “Harleys in Hawaii,” and won praise from Perry as well as the show’s other two celebrity judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

It just didn’t quite get the votes, and K-Blocks departed along with Elleigh Marie, Blake Proehl and Hailey Mia. But the news was better for Triston Harper, the 15-year-old country prodigy from McIntosh, and Mia Matthews, the 19-year-old from Centre. Both got spotlight moments.

MIA MATTHEWS

What she sang: “Wild Flowers and Wild Horses,” a recent Top 10 hit for Lainey Wilson, who co-wrote it. Playing her trademark violet guitar (a pattern Ibanez calls “Purple Iris Burst”), Matthews continued her transformation from shy harmony singer to blossoming solo artist. Half the fun of her “Idol” progression has been watching her realize how much she enjoys spreading her wings, and she seems to fly a little higher every time.

What Katy Perry said about Matthews’ performance: “Not to sound corny, but I think you found your ‘Roar,’” she said, working in a reference to one of her own songs. “The way that you looked at the camera and looked straight in our eyes, you’ve got a lot less fear and that’s what’s going to take you all the way to the top.”

What Luke Bryan said: “Even in your audition, you were really, really subtle with everything. And even just then, I just wanted to see some hair flying. The guitar get tossed, something like that. So think about that too.”

What Lionel Richie said: “All I’m saying is just, way to go, Alabama,” he said, picking up the theme. “It’s actually wonderful to watch, because you’re growing to the point now where it looks like some serious artist action [is] about to happen.”

TRISTON HARPER

What he sang: “HOPE,” an original song with a title that’s an acronym for “Hold On, Pain Ends.” Once again, he showed a depth beyond his years.

What Luke Bryan said: “How do you get that much talent in a 15-year-old? It’s truly remarkable watching you. I believe this is what you’ll do the rest of your life. The day that I knew I could play music the rest of my life was very important. And at 15 years old, I think you’ll be doing this forever.”

What Lionel Richie said: “You might have been a secret before you got to Tuskegee, you will never be a secret again, ever. You still have all the tools, I still want to see your birth certificate, but you have all the tools to have a career for the rest of your life.”

What Katy Perry said: “You’re changing your own life and it’s amazing to see that,” she said, referencing Harper’s aspiration to be a beacon of hope for others. She also praised his stage presence: “You did all the right energetic moves at the right time, it was the real deal Holyfield.”
