Watch teaser video for GameDay feature on Eli Gold

ESPN’s College GameDay will air a feature Saturday on Alabama football radio play-by-play man Eli Gold, chronicling his return to the booth after a one-year absence while battling cancer.

“The Gold Standard,” produced by veteran ESPN writer and broadcaster Ryan McGee, will air during GameDay, which originates live from Tuscaloosa to promote Alabama’s Saturday night showdown with Texas on Saturday. The popular traveling college football pre-game show airs from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Central on ESPN.

Here’s a teaser video that McGee sent out via X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday afternoon:

Gold, 69, has called Alabama football on the radio since 1988, but spent seven months in the hospital late last year and early this year while being treated for Stage 3 esophageal cancer. He lost more than 140 pounds during the ordeal.

The Crimson Tide Sports Network announced last month that Gold would return to the booth this season, but would only work home games. He was back on the call for last week’s season-opener vs. Middle Tennessee, and will also broadcast Saturday’s game vs. Texas.

Chris Stewart, who filled in for Gold full-time last season, will work road games, beginning with next week’s game at South Florida.
