Watch SNL joke about Alabama flagging childrenâs book written by author named Gay
The decision by an Alabama public library to flag a children’s book written by an author whose last name is Gay inspired a joke by Weekend Update’s Colin Jost for the 49th season opener of Saturday Night Live.
“A public library in Alabama has flagged a children’s picture book as potentially sexually explicit just because the author’s last name is Gay,” Jost said.
“Though, to be fair, the book is titled ‘Gay’s Porn For Kids.”
“Read Me a Story, Stella,” a children’s picture book about a pair of siblings reading books and building a doghouse, was written by Marie-Louise Gay.
The book was added to a list of potentially “sexually explicit” books to be moved from the children’s section of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library (HCPL) system.
The controversy caught the attention of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” this week as well.
Karen Li, publisher at Groundwood Books (which publishes Gay’s books) said the book has never been “mistakenly censored.”
“Although it is obviously laughable that our picture book shows up on their list of censored books simply because the author’s last name is Gay, the ridiculousness of that fact should not detract from the seriousness of the situation,” Li said in a statement.
