Watch Johni Broome’s unexpected interaction with actor, Ole Miss fan Morgan Freeman
Auburn senior center Johni Broome felt a hand come from the courtside seating area and grab at his jersey during Saturday night’s Auburn-Ole Miss men’s basketball matchup from Ole Miss’ Sandy and John Black Pavilion in Oxford, Miss.
“I thought it was an Ole Miss fan just grabbing my jersey and holding onto me,” said Broome, who blindley swatted the hand away during the game.
Technically, Broome wasn’t wrong — it was an Ole Miss fan grabbing at his jersey.
However, what he didn’t know was the hand he smacked away belonged to Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning actor and Ole Miss superfan, Morgan Freeman.
Once he turned around after swatting away Freeman’s hand, Broome was visibly shocked to see the “Driving Miss Daisey,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “The Shawshank Redemption” star sitting there.
“Then I saw who it was and, you know, I’m a big movie guy. I probably watched some of his movies on the plane coming here,” Broome joked after No. 16 Auburn’s 91-77 win over Ole Miss. “But I realized it was him and was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m a big fan, I’m sorry.’ And he just said to keep playing.”
Broome finished the night having tallied 15 points — all of which came during his second-half explosion to bring the Tigers back from their nine-point half-time deficit. Broome also chipped in nine rebounds and seven assists during his 25 minutes of action on Saturday night.
Shortly after his initial interaction with Freeman, Broome returned to Freeman, shook his hand and apologized a second time.
“I came back over there again and said I’m sorry again,” Broome said. He said, ‘You’re all good, just keep playing.’ Very good guy. Love him.”
