Watch body cam video of Alabama officers trying to corral elusive pony
The Tuscaloosa police officers tried using treats to coax Ginuwine the pony into being captured after running loose, but he looked a gift horse in the mouth.
Then they tried flashing lights at Ginuwine, who escaped from his home around 10 p.m. Monday and led officers on a nearly two-hour chase through the streets of Tuscaloosa’s Alberta neighborhood before he was finally corraled.
“Guys, this is one for the books,” one of the officers pursuing the pony can be heard saying on dash cam video the department provided Wednesday to AL.com.
The lights also had little effect on Ginuwine, with officers then trying to lasso the pony.
At one point, an officer gets the rope around Ginuwine’s neck as he stands in a driveway. But then the pony escaped and hoofs it down the block, running through the front lawns of nearby homes.
“So close,” an officer says.
“Can I get some backup?” adds another, tongue in cheek.
The officers then discuss strategy before finally cornering Ginuwine in a fenced-in area and rescuing him. He “was happy to get pets and pose for selfies,” the department said Tuesday.
“He was extremely unwilling to go with the officers at first, and not at all interested in the pizza crusts or peppermints they offered,” the department said in a Facebook post Tuesday night.
Police released this “mugshot” of Ginuwine, indicating that the pony was “charged” with third-degree criminal trespassing and resisting arrest:
Despite his bond being set at $800, Ginuwine won’t have to pony up the cash for his release.
“He’s in a safe place now, and we’ve arranged a permanent home in case we don’t find his owners,” the department said Tuesday.
Police still don’t know where Ginuwine escaped from and called for anyone with information on his owner to contact Investigator Hopeman at 205-248-4780.
