Watch a monstrous carpet python crawl across the roof of a house in Australia

It’s a scene straight out of a low-budget monster movie.

A giant snake, estimated at more than 16 feet in length, was captured on video crawling along and then off the roof of a house and into a tree in western Australia.

Because of course Australia.

The giant snake was identified by experts as a carpet python, according to numerous Australian news outlets. The one seen in the video is considerably larger than average, with the typical carpet python ranging from 8 to 13 feet in length.

Carpet pythons are not venomous but do possess a nasty bite thanks to dozens of teeth. They feed largely on small mammals such as bats, as well as birds and lizards.

According to the Queensland government, they live nearly everywhere in Australia other than Tasmania. Officials for the Northern Territory of Australia also say the snakes are “one of the largest, most familiar snakes in Australia, mostly due to its popularity as a pet.”

A pet? Again, it’s Australia.

The unidentified family seen and heard in the video expressed a mixture of shock, fear, humor and indifference. One man heard in the video seemed wholly unimpressed by the massive snake.

“C’mon, your quiche is getting cold,” he told the others.
