Warrant issued for Dallas Cowboys rookie

A warrant has been issued for Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams by the Plano (Texas) Police Department in connection with a traffic accident last month.

The warrant is for reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor, and stems from a two-car wreck on Dec. 22 that caused Williams to miss the Cowboys’ 40-34 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles two days later.

Dallas plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the NFL playoffs at 7:15 p.m. CST Monday. ABC and ESPN will televise the game.

A release from the Plano Police Department said law-enforcement authorities had no plans to seek to arrest Williams, but he had been contacted about the warrant and asked to turn himself in.

Shortly after the accident, police reported Williams was driving south in Plano when his Chevrolet Corvette Z06 hit a northbound Infiniti driven by a 71-year-old woman attempting to make a left turn. Both drivers were taken to a hospital as a precaution, although police said there didn’t appear to be any serious injuries.

Police also said they were investigating whether speed was a factor in the incident.

“My first thing was like, ‘Thank you, God’ because it could’ve been worse,” Williams told reporters a week after the accident. “I was thinking about my son a lot and his mom. Like, dang, I could’ve been gone that fast without seeing them to say goodbye or anything. I was going home to them. I think I was like five to six minutes from my house.

“The accident, I look back over it, and I’m just thankful for life. Then Christmas is right around, and like the biggest gift we have is life every day because you never know, so I encourage everybody to hug their loved ones. Any dispute with family members, anything, end it because you never know when that day is, and me going through that, it’s like I called family members, my mama, everybody to check on them because you never know.

“That was an accident, but there’s more stuff in the world going on, and I’m just thankful that I’m still here because you’re looking at the car like, ‘Man.’ But God works in mysterious ways. I know he has something in store for me.”

A prep star at Lee-Montgomery and a third-round draft choice from Ole Miss, Williams completed his rookie season with 273 defensive snaps and 245 special-teams plays in 15 games. He recorded 22 tackles, four sacks, 10 tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries in his first NFL campaign.
