Warning issued after 19,000 pounds of meat recalled
Almost 19,000 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage, sliced meat and poultry products are being recalled due to sodium nitrate levels that exceed federal limits.
The recall was issued by Smith Packing LLC. and covers foods sold in New York.
The meats were produced on various dates between Feb. 19-April 25. Its rated as a “Class I” recall, meaning it poses “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
The full list of recalled products is available here.
The problem was discovered after the firm notified FSIS that it had received consumer complaints of products that were off-taste and off-color.
Sodium nitrate is used as a preservative and to prevent the growth of bacteria in meat but ingesting higher-than-allowed amounts can pose health risks, reports Newsweek.
To date, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions related to the products.
