Aaron Sorkin’s theater adaptation of Harper Lee’s iconic novel was directed by Bartlett Sher. The play was a hit on Broadway during its run from 2018 to early 2020. Actors such as Jeff Daniels and Ed Harris starred in the production as Atticus, and the play spun off into a national tour with Thomas in the lead role.

Thomas, 72, made his fame as John-Boy in the hit TV series “The Waltons.” He continues to tour with the show and will be on stage in Birmingham, according to a publicist for the Broadway in Birmingham series.

Right now, Maeve Moynihan is playing the role of Scout on the national tour. Mary Badham, who famously portrayed Scout in the 1962 movie version, is currently in the tour in the role of Mrs. DuBose, the Finches’ mean-spirited neighbor. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was shuttered on Broadway during the coronavirus pandemic and returned in October 2021 at the Shubert Theatre. After a few months, the show went on hiatus and never came back, amid a controversy with producer Scott Rudin, who faced allegations of abusive behavior.

The decision for Broadway didn’t affect the national tour, however. For the next two weeks, the tour is in Washington, D.C., playing Aug. 15-27 at the Kennedy Center. It moves on to eight other cities before Birmingham.
