Want to be in a new Taylor Hicks video? Here’s how to do it

Taylor Hicks fans, here are two pieces of news that will make you happy.

First: The Alabama native and former “American Idol” winner is releasing a single on June 16, called “Teach Me to Dance.” It’s the followup to “Porch Swing,” a county-soul tune that Hicks released in February and showcased on “The Bobby Bones Show.”

Second: Hicks is looking for fan photos and videos from weddings, father-daughter dances, anniversary parties and other special events. He’s planning to create a visual collage from them, to be used in video linked to “Teach Me to Dance.”

Hicks announced the new single on Thursday via social media, offering a vignette from the song and explaining the video project to fans.

“NEW SONG ALERT! “Teach Me To Dance” is out June 16th!,” Hicks said in posts on his Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts. “We’re putting together something special & want to feature all of you in it, so send over all of your photos/videos from weddings/parties/etc of special moments in your life involving dancing to [email protected].”

“Teach Me to Dance,” like “Porch Swing,” is part of a collection of songs Hicks has been holding in reserve for several years. The songs are intended for an album, Hicks has said, and many were recorded at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground studios in Nashville. Hicks’ last album, “The Distance,” came out in 2019 on his Modern Whomp label.

The release date for Hicks’ new album remains TBA, but the singer says being patient and strategic with his material is the right decision.

“I’m not with a label; I’m an independent artist,” Hicks told AL.com during an interview earlier this year. “I don’t have the payola. I think you have to let the stars align.”

Videos of Hicks singing “Teach Me to Dance” in concert can be found on YouTube, including one recorded by a fan in 2019 at the Lyric Theatre in Birmingham. Hicks has never released the song, however, and will remedy that on June 16.

Hicks, 46, was born in Birmingham, grew up in Hoover and initially forged a music career by performing at nightclubs and bars in the Southeast. Hicks found fame in 2006 by appearing on, and winning, Season Five of “American Idol.” His popularity on “Idol” helped to boost the TV show to its highest ratings ever, and Hicks became a sensation with his prematurely gray hair, charismatic personality and shouts of “Soul Patrol!”

Hicks — a singer, songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player — has three studio albums to his credit, two live albums and a compilation record that features some of his early material. He’s done a residency in Las Vegas, performed in theater productions (including a Broadway revival of “Grease!”), appeared in an indie movie, hosted a food-and-travel series and more.
