Walmart unveils 117 renovated stores: Here’s what different about new locations

Walmart opened doors on 117 newly renovated stores this week, the largest single-day rollout of re-grand openings in the company’s history. The projects, representing more than half a billion dollars in capital investments, took place across 30 states with more planned for 2024.

“We’re investing more than $9 billion over a two-year period to upgrade and modernize more than 1,400 of our stores across the U.S.,” John Furner, chief executive officer of Walmart U.S. said in a statement.

The company has not announced a timeline for the renovations or which stores will undergo the changes.

Renovated Walmart stores

New paint and fixtures, updated flooring and renovated restrooms are part of the new store design. There will also be new fixtures and LED lighting to brighten the aisles, Walmart said, with additional signage throughout the store.

Additional shopping carts are being added and Walmart promised “transformation” on the front end, including more check-out options – both staffed by store personnel and self-check-out. Larger online grocery pickup and delivery areas have been added, along with new grab-and-go snack and drink sections.

Other new features are:

  • Change in displays: Elevated departments that display products out of their boxes are designed, Walmart said, to help customers “touch, feel and become part of the space.”
  • Digital touchpoints: Walmart said these areas, located throughout the store, will “help communicate the range of products and services offered online through QR codes and digital screens.” For example, in Walmart’s Pets area, customers could scan the QR code to find additional dog bed options, learn about Walmart’s pet insurance service or have a 20-pound bag of kibble delivered to their door.
  • Pharmacy changes: Many pharmacies will be moved to the front of the store and expanded with new private screening rooms for consultation and other services.
  • Updated customer service areas: Additional square footage devoted to customer service areas.
  • Mother’s Room: Private rooms designed for nursing mothers
  • Dollar Shops: Located at store entrances, the areas will offer seasonal products.
