Walmart does away with college degree requirements for some corporate jobs

Applying for certain jobs at Walmart will soon come with one less requirement.

The nation’s largest retailer announced it is revamping hundreds of corporate job descriptions to include those with a college degree or who can show they have gained the needed skills through prior experience or other types of learning.

“Ultimately, Walmart believes the U.S. workforce system needs to transition to a system that recognizes and understands skills in the same way it recognizes and understands college degrees. This gives talented, skilled workers who do not have degrees the same benefits as people who do,” Walmart’s Lorraine Stomski, Senior VP, Associate Learning & Leadership, and Julie Gehrki, VP, Philanthropy, wrote in a blog post.

The positions could include cybersecurity, data analytics and operations, Forbes reported.

For jobs that still require a degree, associates can earn credit hours for on-the-job training or attending classes at Walmart Academy.

The company said it is also expanding its offerings for short-term certificates that allow workers to transition into in-demand positions. Walmart now offers 25 short-form certificates, compared to five in 2020, in fields like data analytics, supply chain management and business economics.
