Walmart could owe you up to $500 as part of a settlement: How to file a claim
Walmart shoppers who purchased certain types of food items could be eligible to receive up to $500 as part of a $45 million settlement.
The settlement covers anyone who bought weighted goods sold by the pound – things like meat, seafood or bagged citrus – between Oct. 19, 2018 to Jan. 19, 2024. . You can go here to see all the weighted meat included in the settlement; you can go here to see the citrus covered by the settlement.
According to the class action lawsuit, Walmart’s point-of-sale machines would artificially raise the weight of the weighted goods when marked at a discounted “Rollback” price, causing the total price to be more than the advertised discount. Also, goods that were nearing expiration and marked with a yellow sticker were sold at a higher price than the per-unit price indicated.
Walmart denies the claims.
“We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need. We still deny the allegations, however, we believe a settlement is in the best interest of both parties,” a spokesperson told Today.
Once the settlement is approved by the court, shoppers are eligible for:
- $10 – If you bought up to 50 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus but don’t have proof of purchase
- $15 – If you bought between 51-75 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus but don’t have proof of purchase
- $20 – If you bought up to 76-100 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus but don’t have proof of purchase
- $25 – If you bought 101 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus but don’t have proof of purchase
- Up to $500 – If you have proof of purchase for each weighted good and/or bagged citrus that was purchased during the settlement period and have the amount you paid for each item, you can receive 2% of the total cost, up to $500.
Claimants may be able to obtain copies of their receipts on Walmart’s website.
The amount of the final payment will depend on how many people opt to participate in the settlement. The deadline to opt out of the settlement is May 22 with an approval hearing set for June 12. The deadline to submit claim forms is June 5.
