Walmart closing some ‘underperforming’ locations
Walmart will close down 7 “underperforming” stores in the coming weeks, according to media reports.
Seven locations across three states will be closed: one each in New Mexico, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Florida and three in Illinois. The closures come after a “thorough review process,” according to WIVB.
The three Illinois closures are all in the Chicago area.
“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a thorough review process,” a Walmart spokesperson told the station. “We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, these specific stores haven’t performed as well as we hoped.”
The mega-retailer recently announced it would be closing three tech hubs and asking hundreds of employees to relocate to keep their jobs. The closures will affect staff working at locations in Austin, Texas; Carlsbad, California; and Portland, Oregon.
The company said in a statement it hopes to relocate or allow remote-work for employees affected by the closures.
