Walmart closing batch of stores: Hereâs the latest list
Walmart is closing 20 stores in 11 states, including Chicago-area stores.
The closures have been announced in recent months and generally include locations that are considered “underperforming.” The nation’s largest retailer is also closing 5 ecommerce fulfillment centers across the U.S. and some of its “pick-up” only locations.

The Chicago closures in particular were singled out for lack of profitability.
“The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago – these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community,” Walmart said in a press release.
