Walker Kessler plays for winning Rising Stars team

Former Auburn standout Walker Kessler played for the winning team in the Panini Rising Stars on Friday night during the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Twenty-one first- and second-year NBA players selected by the league’s assistant coaches were drafted onto teams by Pau Gasol, Tamika Catchings and Jalen Rose and competed with a squad of NBA G League players directed by Detlef Schrempf in a three-game tournament in Indianapolis.

A center for the Utah Jazz, Kessler played for Team Jalen, which defeated Team Tamika 40-35 in the semifinals and Team Detlef 26-13 in the finals. The semifinal games were played to 40 points and the finals to 25. Team Detlef upended Team Pau 41-36 in the semifinals.

Kessler made all three of his shots for six points. He also had three rebounds and one assist while starting both games for Team Jalen.

Two other players with Alabama basketball roots were chosen for the Rising Stars event, and Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller and Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. played for Team Pau.

An Alabama alumnus, Miller had two rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot, but he missed all four of his shots for Team Pau.

An Auburn alumnus, Smith went 2-of-4 from the floor for four points with one rebound.
