Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton win NBA’s skills contest
Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton took home trophies from the NBA All-Star Weekend by joining Utah Jazz teammate Jordan Clarkson to win the Kia Skills Challenge on Saturday night.
Kessler is an Auburn alumnus, and Sexton is an Alabama alumnus.
Team Jazz rallied from a last-place finish in the first round – Team Relay – to win Team Passing and Team Shooting to capture first place in the three-team event in Salt Lake City.
A rookie center, Kessler hasn’t attempted a 3-point shot during his NBA career. But his 3-pointer from the corner put Team Jazz over the top in the final event, Team Shooting.
Another former Auburn standout participated in the Skills Challenge. Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. was on an all-rookie team with the Orlando Magic’s Paolo Banchero and Detroit Pistons’ Jaden Ivey.
The third team in the challenge was supposed to feature the Antetokounmpo brothers – Giannis and Thanasis of the Milwaukee Bucks and Alex of the G League’s Wisconsin Herd. But Giannis Antetokounmpo was a late scratch and replaced by Milwaukee teammate Jrue Holiday.
In Team Relay, players negotiated a course that required them to make a 35-foot outlet pass, dribble through three moving cones and attempt three different shots.
In Team Passing, player tried to throw passes — a 35-foot outlet pass, a 20-foot bounce pass and a 25-foot chest pass — through moving targets in 30 seconds.
In Team Shooting, the players took turns shooting from five spots on the floor.
