Walker County jailer allegedly let inmate have cell phone, sex with civilian in exchange for food discount
A Walker County Jail corrections officer and an inmate are under arrest on bribery and contraband charges.
Anthony Dale Harris, 40, of Jasper, is charged with accepting a bribe as a public servant and first-degree promoting prison contraband, sheriff’s officials announced Thursday.
Inmate Kinte D. Gosha, 46, also of Jasper, is charged with bribery of a public servant and first-degree promoting prison contraband.
Sheriff’s investigators began an investigation when a cell phone was found inside the jail, sheriff’s officials said. Narcotics Investigator Jim Browne and Investigator Carl Carpenter conducted a lengthy investigation of the parties involved and how the phone got into the jail.
The investigation revealed that inmate Kinte Gosha, with the assistance of Corrections Officer Anthony Harris, was able to bring the cell phone into the jail.
Charging documents against Gosha state that he promised Harris discounted food in exchange for the officer letting the inmate use his cell phone.
The complaints also state that Harris let a civilian inside the closed and locked are of the sheriff’s office and then let Gosha into the same area for them to have sex.
As for the contraband charges, records note that a cell phone is dangerous because it can be used to coordinate an escape.
The alleged incidents happened in August.
Sheriff Nick Smith has since fired Harris.
The investigation is ongoing to determine any other staff or inmate involvement in the case.
Harris bonded out of jail.
