Walgreens closing stores on Thanksgiving for the first time ever

Walgreens is joining the ranks of major retailers who are closed on Thanksgiving.

The pharmacy chain announced it will close almost all its 8,200-plus stores and pharmacies on Thanksgiving day (Nov. 23) to “give team members time with their loved ones.”

Twenty-four-hour locations will remain open.

It’s the first time in company history Walgreens has closed stores on Thanksgiving.

“We have consistently heard from our team members—who are the face of Walgreens—that time off is a meaningful way for us to demonstrate we value them,” Tracey D. Brown, EVP, President Walgreens Retail & Chief Customer Officer said in a statement. “We heard them, are committed to listening to their feedback and are dedicated to doing what is right for them. We hope they can enjoy the holiday and spend time with their loved ones.”

The company said a “small” number of Walgreens distribution centers and other sites will remain open.

Locations that are closed on Thanksgiving Day will operate on a regular schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 24. You can check with Walgreens store locator for your location’s hours.
