Wahlburgers closing in Huntsville and here’s what’s going in its place
One door is closing, but another door will soon open at MidCity. Well, actually, it’s the same door.
The celeb-owned Huntsville location of the Wahlburgers hamburger franchise will shutter. The eatery’s last day will be April 13.
However, in that same Wahlburgers space at MidCity District– the development off University Drive home to ventures including Orion Amphitheater, Metronome apartments, Topgolf, Trader Joe’s, etc. – will go a new locally owned concept, Dragon Alley.
Described in a press release as an “Asian street food bar and restaurant,” Dragon Alley’s menu will focus on “top-notch Asian cuisine,” “shareable plates” and “delicious drinks.”
Atmosphere-wise, they’re aiming for ‘90s Hong Kong vibes, in the form of “neon lights, colorful artwork, artisanal wooden tables and unique accent pieces,” according to the release.
Dragon Alley is the newest concept from local entrepreneurs Jim Xue and Yunus Hasan’s HX Brands. If you don’t know that name, you probably know the names of some of their other ventures around Huntsville, like Chop N Fresh, Kamado Ramen, Tous les Jours, Oh Crepe, Kung Fu Tea and I Love Sushi.
In addition to their original Kamada Ramen location at Stovehouse, there’s also one at MidCity. Dragon Alley’s executive chef will be Chao Fang, who’s also worked with Kamado Ramen.
In a statement HX Brands’ Hasan says, “As avid foodies, we felt compelled to introduce Huntsville to culinary concepts typically reserved for larger cities. Our latest concept, Dragon Alley, promises to bring vibrant flavors and energy straight to our district’s dining experience, cooking up something fresh and unique that everyone can enjoy at an affordable price point.”
A planned opening date for Dragon Alley hasn’t been announced as of publishing of this story. A press release indicates future updates on the opening will be posted on MidCity’s Facebook and Instagram.
In a statement MidCity developer Max Grelier said, “In order for Huntsville to compete with larger markets for workforce, we need to elevate our food scene as well. At MidCity, we are actively engaged in discussions with talented chefs from surrounding markets, aiming for Huntsville to be known as a city that over-indexes on culinary experiences for its size.”
Wahlburgers opened its Huntsville location in 2021. The chain’s owned by chef Paul Wahlberg and his famous brothers: Mark Wahlberg, the movie star who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 2010 crime film “The Departed,” and Donnie Wahlberg, the singer/actor of New Kids On The Block ‘80s boyband fame.
Wahlburgers was the subject of a reality TV show of the same name, on cable channel A&E for around five years. The restaurant’s original location opened 2011 in the Boston area.
Wahlburgers signature menu items include the “Our Burger,” topped with government cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and “Wahl Sauce,” the chain’s signature blend of ketchup, mayonnaise, sriracha, sauteed onions and parsley.
In recent years, Wahlburgers locations closed in markets including New York, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ross Township and North Hills, Pennsylvania and Frisco, Texas. A 2023 Mashable article detailed the recent struggles of the chain, which has around 50 locations worldwide, according to that article.
Wahlburgers’ Huntsville closure was announced Thursday on the franchise’s social media. That statement opened with, “It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of Wahlburgers in Huntsville. Over the years, your unwavering support has meant everything to us, and we are immensely grateful for the memories, laughter, and joy that you have brought into our restaurant.”
