Vote for your choice for the Week 7 State Volleyball Player of the Week
Top performers from across the state are among the Week 7 State Volleyball Player of the Week nominees with seven of the 15 on the list reaching career milestones last week.
Some of these players helped their teams win tournaments, such as Homewood’s Margaret Blalock Tournament and the Battle of Old Shell Road in Mobile, and advance to the finals in the Lauderdale County Tournament. Others contributed to regular-season wins, including area contests that are helping determine where the postseason matches will be held.
Check out these nominees, in alphabetical order, chosen based on information provided by coaches and statisticians and vote for your favorite.
Voting will end Thursday at 5 p.m. and results will be posted on Fridays during the season.
Week 7 nominees:
Cailyn Boykin, Spanish Fort: The sophomore had 157 assists last week to go over 1,000 on the season. She finished the week with 1,099 assists thus far and had 30 digs, 13 aces, eight kills and four blocks. Boykin helped Class 6A No. 3 Spanish Fort to a championship in the Battle of Old Shell Road Tournament. The Toros were 43-7 after last week’s matches.
Lauren Buchanan, Chelsea: The senior surpassed 300 career aces with four as the Hornets swept Pell City and Homewood to improve to 22-12 on the year. Buchanan also had 35 kills and a .522 hitting percentage for Class 6A No. 7 Chelsea.
Molly Burchell, Lauderdale County: The senior outside hitter had 42 digs to eclipse the 1,000 mark in her career as the second-ranked Class 3A Tigers won their way into the county tournament finals. She also had 15 aces and three blocks as Lauderdale County pushed its record to 34-9.
Lydia Carter, Lindsay Lane: Carter helped the top-ranked Class 2A Lions win the Silver Bracket in the Janet Lathem Invitational at Athens with 103 kills, 91 digs, 10 aces and four blocks.
Josie Childress, Priceville: The junior delivered 89 assists, 46 digs and six aces as the No. 4 Class 4A Bulldogs won their Priceville Varsity Tournament. Priceville is 43-6 on the season.
Addy Gustafson, Madison County: The junior setter had 122 assists last week to surpass 2,000 for her career. She also had 51 digs as the top-ranked Class 4A Tigers ran their record to 31-10.
Olivia Gunster, Hoover: The senior outside hitter had 101 digs last week to go over 1,000 in her career. She also had 54 kills and 15 aces as Class 7A No. 3 Hoover split a pair of regular-season matches and lost in the semifinals of the Margaret Blalock Tournament at Homewood. The Bucs beat 7A No. 1 McGill-Toolen and lost to 6A No. 1 Montgomery Academy.
Melaina Haines, Mobile Christian: The junior setter/outside hitter pushed her career kills total past 1,500 to 1,563 last week. She had 108 to go with 13 aces, 77 assists, 78 digs and eight blocks for the No. 1 Leopards (27-7).
Lily Henry, Pleasant Valley: The senior had 49 kills and 63 digs to surpass 1,800 career kills and 1,600 career digs. She also had 11 aces and four blocks for the 11-17 Raiders.
Camdyn Kyes, Spain Park: An eighth-grader, Kyes had 34 digs to push her career total to 500. She also had 76 assists and six aces as the Jaguars (23-13) beat 7A Sparkman and lost to three ranked teams – 6A No. 1 Montgomery Academy, 7A No. 2 Bob Jones and 7A No. 10 Thompson.
Chloe May, Central-Florence: The senior setter pushed past 5,000 assists in her career with 239 last week to finish with 5,029. She also had 73 digs and 16 aces for the Class 4A No. 4 Wildcats.
Kadence Rolston, Mars Hill Bible: A senior outside hitter for the No. 4 Class 2A Panthers (28-10), Rolston had 121 kills and 69 digs. She is three digs away from 1,000 for her career.
Callee Taylor, Donoho: The junior setter had 144 assists, 38 digs, seven kills and three aces for the 27-14 Falcons.
Kennedy Vaughn, Bob Jones: The senior outside hitter surpassed 2,000 kills with 77 on the week as the No. 7 Class 7A Patriots improved to 45-8 with a second-place finish in the Louisville (Ky.) JCIVT tournament. She also had 42 digs, eight blocks and five aces.
Alice Wood, McGill-Toolen: The sophomore setter finished with 210 assists, 12 aces, 38 digs, seven kills and seven blocks as The Dirty Dozen won the 36th annual Margaret Blalock Tournament at Homewood. McGill is 33-8 on the year and is ranked first in Class 7A.
