Vontrell King-Williams contract: Auburn will pay new DT coach a $500,000 salary

Newly promoted Auburn defensive tackles coach Vontrell King-Williams will make $500,000 per year in a new two-year deal beginning in early February, according to a copy of his contract acquired by AL.com in a public records request.

Auburn announced the promotion of King-Williams on Feb. 9 from a role on staff as an analyst. Former defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett reportedly took a similar job with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this month, leaving an opening for an on-field position coach spot.

King-Williams was named the coach for the defensive tackles while previous linebackers coach Josh Aldridge had his role shifted to coach the edge rushers. New defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin will coach the linebackers.

King-Williams contract does not include any retention bonuses, but does include the identical bonus structure to previously obtained Auburn assistant coach contracts.

The deal includes a full buyout in the event King-Williams is fired, as well as a mitigation clause should he make money at a new coaching position before the expiration date of his Auburn contract (Jan. 31, 2026).

Should King-Williams leave for another job before the end of his contract, he will owe Auburn one year’s salary should he leave before the end of the 2024 season. He will owe $125,000 should he leave before the end of the 2025 season.

Those amounts owed to Auburn are voided if King-Williams leaves for a college head coach or play-calling coordinator position or any job in the NFL.
