Viral video of Tommy Tuberville falling down stairs is not what you think

Video of Tommy Tuberville falling down stairs as he exited an airplane went viral on social media when the clip resurfaced on Wednesday, juxtaposed with the Alabama senator’s comments that he worries constantly about President Biden tumbling.

But the viral clip is not what you think.

The video’s resurgence began on Tuesday:

Brett Meiselas, co-founder of the liberal Meidas Touch PAC, got the video to reach viral heights when he reposted it to his Twitter account on Wednesday morning under the caption, “Tommy Tumbleville.”

Newsweek picked up on the video, publishing a story suggesting Tuberville fell on Wednesday and pointing out that the senator criticized the president’s balance.

“Users on X, formerly Twitter, flooded the social networking site to poke fun at Tuberville, who was seen slipping down a number of steps while getting off an aircraft on Wednesday. Carrying a small luggage in one hand and a duffle bag in the other, the Alabama Republican appeared to lose his footing after three steps and slid the rest of the way down. Airport personnel were seen checking on him at the bottom of the stairs,” the outlet wrote.

Other social media users alluded to Tuberville’s remark about Biden, “I mean, I’m afraid he’s going to fall down every time I turn on television.” They claimed Tuberville’s fall was “karma.”

While the video is not AI generated or Photoshopped — it is of Tuberville and is of him falling — the tumble did not occur Wednesday, or even during Tuberville’s tenure as Alabama’s senior senator.

The clip is from 2014, when Tuberville was coaching the University of Cincinnati football team.
