Between a Chuy’s and a Lululemon on Friday night in suburban Birmingham was part of college football’s rich tapestry of traditions.

The Texas A&M Yell Practice hit the road before Saturday night’s visit to Bryant-Denny Stadium with 100-plus fans jammed into a plaza at The Summit off US-280.

Starting at 10 p.m., instead of midnight, the junior yell leader kicked things off with a few sets of mini pushups. The video of that quickly went viral before getting to the main event.

The first of the two fables — essentially trash talk of the upcoming opponent — didn’t go so well but the gathered fans offered encouragement for the yell leader working to remember his lines.

Yell leader: “What’s written on the back of every Alabama degree?”

Crowd: “What?”

“Yell leader: “Will work for foood!”

There was a lot of hissing at his story about a “useless, hanky panky, no good Alabama fan” who struggled with last year’s 41-38 loss to Texas A&M.

There were some actual Alabama fans who crashed the party, interested to see what this tradition was all about. Someone yelled “Roll Tide” in a quiet moment and there was a guy with a sign poking fun at the out-of-town guests.
