Vidal, Troy hold off Western Kentucky for 27-24 victory

Kimani Vidal ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns as Troy held on to beat Western Kentucky 27-24 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Vidal ran for scores of 19 and 11 yards, the last giving the Trojans (2-2) a two-score lead in the fourth quarter. The Hilltoppers (2-2) cut the score to 27-24 on Austin Reed’s second touchdown pass of the game with 2:29 left, but Troy ran out the clock with a pair of third-down conversions — a 28-yard screen pass from Gunnar Watson to Vidal and a 9-yard run by Vidal.

“We’re resilient,” Troy coach Jon Sumrall said in his postgame interview on ESPNU. “We lost a heartbreaker last week (to James Madison), and our kids, they were backed up against the wall a little bit. And we’re tough. I don’t know if we’re any good or not, but we’re tough.”

Watson passed for 349 yards and a touchdown, a 40-yard Hail Mary to Chris Lewis on the final play of the first half. That put the Trojans up 10-7, and they never trailed again.

Lewis, a Kentucky transfer, finished the day with 101 yards on three receptions. Here’s video of the touchdown:

Reed threw for 268 yards for Western Kentucky, including scores of 22 yards to Malachi Corley and 12 to Easton Messer. K.D. Hutchinson ran for a 10-yard score for the Hilltoppers’ other touchdown.

Troy returns to Sun Belt Conference play next Saturday at Georgia State.
