Victim identified, suspect in custody in Daphne restaurant homicide

The victim has been identified and a suspect is in custody in the fatal shooting of a restaurant manager in Daphne Thursday morning, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed.

The victim, a manager at Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe, has been identified as 38-year-old Jason Michael Mallette. Mallette had arrived for work early Thursday when he was confronted by another man, with the two men exchanging words before Mallette was shot once in the chest.

A female employee at the restaurant called 911 and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures on Mallette, but they were ultimately unsuccessful.

The suspect, described as a Black male wearing a dark hoodie, fled the scene on foot.

Thursday evening, Mobile County deputies arrested 41-year-old Travis Dante Orlando Lofton Sr. at his residence on Osage Street in the Toulminville community. During his arrest, a weapon was found in Lofton’s vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lofton is charged with murder and is being held without bond in the Baldwin County Jail.

Investigators say Lofton’s wife was a Taziki’s employee, there was a grievance with Mallette, and the shooting was a targeted attack, according to a report by WALA.
