Victim identified in drowning on Gulf Shores beach

A 69-year-old Hartford, Kansas, man was identified as the victim of a drowning at a Gulf Shores beach Sunday.

Joseph K. Jackson was prounounced dead at a South Baldwin Regional Medical Center’s freestanding emergency room in Gulf Shores shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office.

Jackson was pulled from the water and Gulf Shores rescue personnel attempted resuscitation, but he was ultimately pronounced dead after reaching the emergency room.

“They got on scene and it was a mid-60-year-old male, caught in the water by a rip current,” said Melvin Shepard, Chief of Staff for the Gulf Shores Fire Department, via the Orange Beach, Alabama website.

“Bystanders were able to get to him and assisted in getting him out of the water, but once lifeguards and firefighters got there, they tried everything they could to resuscitate him but it wasn’t successful.”

The drowning took place off the beach in the 1000 block of West Beach Boulevard. Red flags were posted on the beach, meaning high hazard surf and/or current conditions were present.

Swimming is allowed in single red flag conditions, but with extreme caution and is only advisable for strong swimmers. Two red flags had been posted the previous day, meaning swimming was prohibited.

“Understand what that flag means and understand your personal swimming abilities,” Shepard said. “If you are a weak swimmer and we have red flags up please stay out of the water.”
