Veteran stabbed to death in Birmingham on New Year’s Eve was ‘a beacon of joy,’ family says

Family and friends are mourning the death of a beloved husband, father and U.S. Army veteran who was fatally stabbed in Birmingham on New Year’s Eve.

Ernest Paul “Rickey” Christion Jr., 68, was found slain Tuesday night.

Just after 7 p.m., Birmingham’s West Precinct Officers were dispatched to a house in the 2500 block of 15th Street Ensley.

Officers entered the house and found Christion unresponsive inside.

He was rushed by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m.

Christion was Birmingham’s last homicide victim of 2024, which saw a record number of people die by violence.

Investigators spoke with numerous people on the scene but have not yet disclosed a motive or made any arrests.
