Vestavia Hills police chase ends in fatal crash when driver is thrown from vehicle in Bessemer

A Vestavia Hills police chase ended in a fatal crash early Friday in western Jefferson County.

Lt. Michael Keller said the incident began shortly after 12:30 a.m. when an officer spotted a vehicle driving northbound on Interstate 65 just before the Alford Avenue Exit.

The officer, Keller said, had reason to the believe the driver of the vehicle was possibly impaired.

The officer turned on his lights and sirens and tried to stop the driver, but the driver did not stop and turned onto Lakeshore Parkway toward Highway 150.

The pursuit continued along Highway 150 and then onto Morgan Road in the Bessemer area.

Keller said the suspect hit a curb at the intersection of Morgan Road and Greenwood Road. He lost control of his vehicle and hit an oncoming motorist.

The suspect’s vehicle overturned, and he was ejected. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:43 a.m.

His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family, but the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said he was a 37-year-old white male from Bessemer.

The driver of the other vehicle hit by the suspect, Keller said, was treated by Bessemer Fire and Rescue and then taken to UAB Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation into the fatal crash.
