USFL will hold its first college draft on Tuesday

The USFL will hold its first college draft on Tuesday, when the eight teams will conduct 10 rounds of selections.

Players who have been out of high school for at least three years and have completed or waived their college eligibility are eligible for the draft. Junior-college players who are two years out of high school and have not joined a four-year program also can be considered.

“We are building the USFL for long-term success and our first-ever college draft demonstrates our clear focus on building winning teams for Season 2, Season 3 and beyond,” said Daryl Johnston, the USFL’s executive vice president of football operations, in a release from the league. “The USFL will continue to search for and evaluate the best players to join our league. We are excited to see who the next KaVontae Turpin will be to turn an opportunity with the USFL into a springboard for success in the NFL. Conducting our inaugural college draft shows that the USFL is committed to providing these talented players an alternative route to pursue their professional football dreams.”

The draft will start at noon CST Tuesday.

The Michigan Panthers hold the first pick because they defeated the Pittsburgh Maulers 33-21 on the final weekend of the USFL’s 2022 regular season. Each team entered the game with a 1-8 record, and the USFL designated the winner to receive the first draft position.

After the Panthers and Maulers, the teams line up to pick in inverse order of the 2022 standings with the Houston Gamblers at No. 3 followed by the Memphis Showboats, New Orleans Breakers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars and Birmingham Stallions, the 2022 USFL championship team.

There is an exception to the order, though, because New Jersey has been penalized for violating offseason roster-management rules. The Generals have had to forfeit their first-round pick, and instead of picking sixth, New Jersey will have the final selection in the second through fifth rounds before returning to its position as the sixth team to select in the sixth through 10th rounds.

The USFL played its entire 40-game regular season in Birmingham last year. This season, the USFL has four hubs where two teams apiece will train, practice and play home games.

The Stallions remain in Birmingham with the Breakers.
