USFL Week 5 roundup: Stars kicker makes 8 field goals
Luis Aguilar connected from 55 yards on the final snap for his eighth field goal of the game to lift the Philadelphia Stars to a 24-21 victory over the New Jersey Generals on Sunday.
Aguilar set a USFL record as he accounted for all the Stars’ points at Ford Field in Detroit. His other field goals came from 22, 42, 56, 36, 27, 51 and 49 yards.
In the USFL’s other Week 5 games:
· Pittsburgh’s defense held the Michigan Panthers to 152 yards and recorded four takeaways, four sacks and 10 tackles for loss in the Maulers’ 23-7 victory on Saturday at Ford Field.
· Houston running back Mark Thompson ran for three touchdowns and the Gamblers scored 20 straight fourth-quarter points to defeat the Birmingham Stallions 27-20 on Saturday at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. The Stallions had 10 penalties and the Gamblers had none. A 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Terry Wilson to wide receiver Anthony Ratliff-Williams gave Houston a 14-13 lead. A miss on a 51-yard field-goal attempt put the Gamblers on their 41-yard line, and, with the help of two penalties, they drove for another touchdown. Trailing 20-13, Birmingham had a successful fourth-and-4 throw nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty, then lost a fourth-and-14 completion to video review with 1:48 to play to put Houston on the Stallions 8 and set up the Gamblers’ final points.
· The Memphis Showboats pinned the first loss of the season on the New Orleans Breakers with a 17-10 victory on Sunday at Protective Stadium. Down by one point, the Showboats went on nine-play, 59-yard drive capped by quarterback Cole Kelley’s 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Mitchell and 2-point conversion pass to running back Juwan Washington with 2:16 to play. New Orleans’ final possession ended on a fourth-and-4 incompletion at the Breakers 29-yard line. New Orleans had the opportunity to get the football again but jumped offside on fourth-and-2 with 39 seconds to play. A span of 2:37 in the second quarter featured five turnovers – two fumbles and one interception by the Breakers and one interception and one fumble by the Showboats.
The NFL record for field goals in a game is held by former Auburn kicker Rob Bironas, who made eight in the Tennessee Titans’ 38-36 victory over the Houston Texans on Oct. 21, 2007.
The Stars needed Aguilar’s final field goal after New Jersey quarterback Kyle Lauletta’s 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion pass with 21 seconds to play capped a drive that included a fourth-down conversion at the Generals 17-yard line.
Terry Wright’s 32-yard return of a short kickoff put Philadelphia at the New Jersey 47 with 14 seconds remaining.
The Generals lost even though they gained 354 yards to the Stars’ 166. New Jersey also had four turnovers while Philadelphia had none.
Generals running back Darius Victor, the 2022 USFL Offensive Player of the Year, lost three fumbles. The first two – recovered at the New Jersey 32 and 20 – set up Philadelphia field goals, and the Stars recovered the last one at their 3-yard line with 5:31 remaining.
The Week 5 results left the four North Division teams – Michigan, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh – with identical 2-3 records. In the South, New Orleans is 4-1, Birmingham and Houston are 3-2 and Memphis is 2-3.
