USFL Week 3 roundup: The other home teams win

Saturday was Little Brother Day in the USFL.

The New Orleans Breakers have everything to be Birmingham’s home team except the name. The Breakers play their home games at Protective Stadium and practice in the Magic City, the same as the Stallions. But it’s the Birmingham Stallions that get the support as the hometown team.

The same goes for the Houston Gamblers and the Memphis Showboats at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.

On Saturday, the stadium roommates squared off, and the Breakers beat the Stallions 45-31 in Birmingham while the Gamblers defeated the Showboats 30-26 in Memphis.

The USFL completed its Week 3 schedule on Sunday:

· The Pittsburgh Maulers stopped a fourth-down throw into the end zone from their 18-yard line with one second to play to emerge with a 21-13 victory over the Philadelphia Stars in Detroit. In his first game with Pittsburgh, Chris Blewitt made five field goals.

· The New Jersey Generals scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and finished with 198 rushing yards in a 28-13 victory over the Michigan Panthers in Detroit.

The Breakers scored touchdowns on their three full possessions in the second half to pull away from a halftime tie as the New Orleans offense rolled up 483 yards.

Wes Hill ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries against Birmingham. Breakers quarterback McLeod Bethel-Johnson completed 20-of-28 passes for 283 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Birmingham quarterback Alex McGough completed 17-of-26 passes for 238 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, and wide receiver Davion Davis had five receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown for the Stallions.

The Stallions lost even though wide receiver Deon Cain returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown.

At 3-0, the Breakers are the USFL’s only unbeaten team.

In Memphis, Houston quarterback Kanji Bahar threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Justin Hall with 13 seconds left to provide the winning margin for the Gamblers.

Bahar completed 22-of-36 passes for 235 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Both TD passes went to Hall.

Memphis quarterback Cole Kelley completed 21-of-38 passes for 307 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
