USFL Week 2 roundup: Stallions stomp Showboats

Despite a lengthy injury list, the Birmingham Barons ripped the Memphis Showboats 42-2 in Week 2 of the USFL’s 2023 season on Saturday night at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.

In the other Week 2 games:

· The New Orleans Breakers ended Houston’s final two possessions with interceptions and scored a touchdown in between to defeat the Gamblers 38-31 on Saturday in Birmingham.

· The New Jersey Generals held the Pittsburgh Maulers to 166 yards and had three takeaways in a 20-3 victory on Sunday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

· Michigan running back Reggie Corbin ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and the Panthers came up with four takeaways in a 24-10 victory over the Philadelphia Stars on Sunday night in Canton. The Stars scored on only one of their four red-zone possessions.

Over the past week, the Stallions placed four offensive leaders on injured reserve – quarterback J’Mar Smith, wide receiver Marlon Williams (McGill-Toolen), running back Bo Scarbrough (Northridge, Alabama) and fullback Bobby Holly. Birmingham also played without safety Jojo Tillery and inside linebacker Scooby Wright.

Stallions quarterback Alex McGough completed 21-of-28 passes for 301 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Tight end Jace Sternberger had five receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown for Birmingham.

The Stallions outgained the Showboats 463-183 in yardage. Memphis also lost two turnovers.

· Breakers defensive tackle Connor Christian (Jacksonville State) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Breakers quarterback Aqeel Glass (Alabama A&M) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Breakers running back Ezra Gray (Alabama State) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Breakers guard Kirk Kelley (Troy) did not record any stats.

· Gamblers safety Bydarrius Knighten (Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Showboats defensive end Big Kat Bryant (Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Showboats wide receiver John Franklin III (Auburn) had an 11-yard reception, an 8-yard run and a 36-yard kickoff return.

· Stallions safety T.J. Green (Sylacauga) did not record any stats.

· Stallions wide receiver Myron Mitchell (Jasper, UAB) caught four passes for 32 yards and one touchdown. Mitchell scored the game’s final touchdown when he caught a 2-yard pass with 1:51 to play.

· Running back Bo Scarbrough (Northridge, Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Stallions wide receiver Austin Watkins (UAB) caught three passes for 42 yards, including a 25-yarder.

· Wide receiver Marlon Williams (McGill-Toolen) in on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Generals cornerback Blake Countess (Auburn) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Generals running back Kingston Davis (Prattville, UAB/Miles) gained 21 yards on eight rushing attempts and caught two passes for 5 yards.

· Maulers center Xavier Dampeer (Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Generals defensive back Trae Elston (Oxford) made eight tackles.

· Maulers linebacker Reuben Foster (Auburn High, Alabama) made three tackles and broke up a pass. Foster left the game for the sideline medical tent with 6:50 to play with an apparent shoulder injury.

In Week 3 of the USFL season, the Breakers and Stallions square off at 11:30 a.m. CDT Saturday at Protective Stadium in Birmingham on USA, the Showboats and Gamblers play at 6 p.m. Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee, on FOX, the Maulers and Stars meet at 11 a.m. Sunday at Ford Field in Detroit on NBC and the Generals and Panthers face off at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ford Field on FOX.
