USA’s Kelsey Thompson named Sun Belt Freshman of Year
South Alabama guard Kelsey Thompson was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in women’s basketball on Monday.
Thompson, a Mobile native who played her high school basketball at Davidson, is averaging 10.5 points, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. All three averages lead the Jaguars this season.
Thompson posted five 20-point games this season, including a high of 27 vs. Louisiana-Monroe on Jan. 28. She hit the game-winning shot as time expired in a 60-59 victory over Troy this past Friday.
Thompson and South Alabama (7-22, 3-15 Sun Belt) are the No. 13 seed for the conference tournament, which begins Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla. The Jaguars meet No. 12 Georgia State in a first-round game at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pensacola Bay Center.
