USA pitcher Lackie, coach Clark honored by Sun Belt

South Alabama’s Olivia Lackie was named Sun Belt Conference Softball Pitcher of the Year in league awards announced Tuesday.

In addition, the Jaguars’ Becky Clark was selected as Sun Belt Coach of the Year. The award is the second straight and third all-time for Clark, who is in her 19th year at South Alabama.

Lackie, a junior from Walker, La., is 20-6 with a 1.58 ERA and 201 strikeouts this season. She has been named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year six times in 2023.

Lackie is South Alabama’s first-ever Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year. She has set the program’s single-season record with shutouts this season with 12, and also holds the program career record with 31.

Clark led the Jaguars to a program-record 20 Sun Belt Conference wins this season, in addition to a 38-13 overall record. The Jaguars opens Sun Belt tournament play as the No. 3 seed, facing No. 6 James Madison at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lafayette, La.

Lackie was one of three Jaguars who earned first-team All-Sun Belt honors, along with third baseman Meredith Keel and right fielder Victoria Ortiz. Pitcher Jenna Hardy and center fielder Mackenzie Brasher were chosen to the second-team.

Keel, a senior from Ashville, Ohio, leads the team in hits (54), walks (23) and runs (42), along with a .348/.429/.484 batting line, 10 doubles, three home runs and 29 RBIs. Ortiz, a senior from Mobile, leads the Jaguars in batting average (.361), slugging percentage (.646), home run (9) and RBIs (49).

Hardy, a senior from Whitehouse, Ohio, is 17-7 with a 1.62 ERA and 136 strikeouts as the Jaguars’ No. 2 pitcher. Brasher, a senior from Orange Beach, is hitting .306 with 38 runs scored and 25 steals.
