US Marshals elevate Alabama capital murder suspect to â15 Most Wantedâ status
An Indiana man wanted for capital murder in an Alabama slaying has been added to the U.S. Marshals Service “15 Most Wanted” list.
Joshua Smiley, 26, is sought in connection with the 2021 shooting death of a 30-year-old man on Amsterdam Street in Mobile.
U.S. Marshals in April announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Smiley and, on Tuesday, increased that reward to $25,000.
He is also wanted by U.S. Marshals for a bond violation on a federal drug charge in Fort Wayne.
Smiley was convicted in 2019 for taking part in a 2018 fatal shooting in Fort Wayne and had been sentenced to five years in prison, with two years suspended.
Authorities said Smiley is known to carry guns and should be considered armed and dangerous. He could be in Mobile, Fort Wayne or Indianapolis.
He is 6-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and tattoos on both arms.
The U.S. Marshals ‘15 Most Wanted’ fugitive program draws attention to some of the country’s most dangerous fugitives.
“These fugitives tend to be career criminals with histories of violence, and they pose a significant threat to public safety,’’ the USMS states. “Considered the ‘worst of the worst,’ the fugitives include murderers, sex offenders, major drug kingpins, organized crime figures and individuals wanted for high-profile financial crimes.
Since the program began in 1983, more than 250 ‘Most Wanted’ fugitive cases have been closed.
Anyone with information on Smiley’s whereabouts is asked to contact the U.S. Marshals Service at 1-877-WANTED2 or via the USMS Tips App. 15
