Upsets brewing in AL.com’s fans basketball Player of the Year bracket

With a few weekend days left to vote, there are several upsets brewing and several tight races in AL.com’s girls and boys basketball player of the year brackets.

On the girls side, as of Friday morning, there are at least three possible upsets on the horizon. No. 14 seed Jamonica Chambers of Vigor leads No. 3 Saniya Jackson of Park Crossing, No. 10 Sarah Gordon of Vestavia Hills leads No. 7 Shila Marks of Lauderdale County and No. 13 Chauncey Dixon of McIntosh leads No. 4 Belle Hill of Mars Hill.

The closest race is the 10 vs. 7 where Gordon’s lead was just 24 votes. No. 1 seed Ace Austin has a 374 vote lead over No. 16 Maddie Smith of Trinity.

Round 1 voting for the girls ends Monday night. Quarterfinal voting will begin Tuesday. To vote in Round 1 and see the contenders, click this link.

On the boys side, there are currently five possible upsets, including 16 seed Jayden Williams of Ramsay leading No. 1 seed DeWayne Brown of Hoover.

Other potential upsets include No. 10 Devin Barksdale of Gadsden City vs No. 7 Skyler Stovall of Montgomery Academy, No. 11 Jacobe Whitted of McAdory vs. No. 6 Austin Coner of Pinson Valley, No. 12 Brayden Rivers of Huntsville vs. No. 5 Jaylen Alexander of Oxford and No. 13 Jayden Parks of Brantley vs. No. 4 J.D. Gossett of Huntsville.

The closest race is the 8-9 race between 8 seed Peyton Wiggins of Huffman and 9 seed Milton Jones Jr. of Fairfield. Wiggins currently leads by 74 votes.

Round 1 voting for the boys concludes Sunday night. Quarterfinal voting will begin Monday. The fans’ Players of the Year will be announced April 14 (boys) and April 15 (girls).
