Upscale Japanese restaurant coming to Birmingham’s The Frank
Birmingham city officials have inked a deal to bring an upscale Japanese restaurant to downtown.
On Tuesday, the City Council authorized financial and tax incentives to Johin’na, under the city’s RISE program.
Under the terms of the agreement Johin’na will receive $50,000 and a tax incentive of up to a little more than $371,000 over the next three years. RISE, or Retention Incentives for Success and Expansion, was established in March 2022 to retain and help expand local businesses.
Johin’na will occupy space at The Frank, Orchestra Partners’ $40 million transformation of the 120,000-square-foot Frank Nelson Building on 20th Street North into an apartment community.
On its website, Johin’na bills itself as “Japanese cuisine with a modern flare.” Its planned menu will include Robata (hot charcoal cooking), sashimi, sushi, oysters, sake and cocktails. It is currently looking for workers. There has been no opening date announced.
Plans originally announced for The Frank included an onsite restaurant, as well as a tenant lounge, roof deck and two-story outdoor terrace.
The Frank was originally built to be the First National Bank Building in 1903.
