Updating South Alabama’s 5 spring position battles following Red-Blue game
South Alabama is done with spring football for 2023, with the Jaguars having held their annual Red-Blue game this past Saturday at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
This spring was the third under Kane Wommack, who coached the Jaguars to a 10-3 record and their first bowl berth in six years last season. South Alabama returned 20 players with extensive starting experience this spring, leaving few positions undecided heading into the offseason.

Still, there were a handful of competitions that bore watching. Here’s a post-spring update of our 5 position battles to watch this spring:
1. Wide receiver
Caullin Lacy and Devin Voisin were established starters at two of the three wide receiver positions coming into the spring, but there was intrigue at the third spot vacated by NFL draft hopeful Jalen Wayne. Memphis transfer Javon Ivory and holdover Jay’juan Townsend missed much of the spring due to injury, leaving junior-college transfer Shamar Sandgren, returnee Keyshawn Woodyard and walk-ons Jamaal Pritchett and Jeremiah Webb to get extra reps. Ivory — who had 99 catches in three seasons at Memphis — is still likely the front-runner to be the third starter come September, but Sandgren and Pritchett in particular proved this spring they could be counted upon when the games matter.
2. Center
Fifth-year senior Reggie Smith moved over from right guard this spring, and appeared to take a strong hold on the job vacated by two-year starting center James Jackson. Mississippi State transfer Reed Buys showed versatility by playing both guard and center this spring, and is likely to inherit the center job once Smith graduates. Smith’s move to the middle also opened up the right guard position, which appears will be filled by former starting left guard Dontae Lucas. Tennessee transfer James Robinson took almost all of the first-team reps at left guard this spring, and Lucas moved to the right side after he returned from a knee injury late in camp (Reid Gavin took most of the right guard reps while Lucas was sidelined). The two starting tackles, Josh McCulloch and Adrein Strickland, appeared to solidify their jobs in spring as well.
3. Outside linebacker
This competition gets an incomplete, as the three scholarship players in the mix at “Wolf” linebacker — Quentin Wilfawn, DK Bonhomme and Dalton Hughes — missed most or all of spring while recovering from offseason surgery. This is Wilfawn’s job when he’s healthy, and the former starting inside linebacker is expected to be cleared for contact well ahead of summer workouts. Two newcomers who got valuable reps during the spring and who could provide depth in the fall were walk-ons Nick Curtis (Auburn) and Eli Webb (Belhaven).
4. Cornerback
This position group enters 2023 with as little proven talent as any on the South Alabama roster. Two-year starter Darrell Luter (a likely NFL draft pick later this month) and part-time starter Jamar Richardson have exhausted their eligibility, leaving only returning starter Marquise “Cuddie” Robinson with extensive experience at the Division I level. The Jaguars emerged from spring with three players they felt good about, with sophomore Ricky Fletcher (one of the jewels of the Jaguars’ 2022 recruiting class) and junior-college transfer Reggie Neely (who signed in December and enrolled in January) joining Robinson in that group. Returnees Dallas Gamble and Jason Brooks are also in the mix for playing time, though this is one position South Alabama might try to shore up in the transfer portal.
5. Safety
Four proven veterans return here: Yam Banks at the nickel (Husky) spot, and Keith Gallmon, Jaden Voisin and Jalen Jordan at the two back-end positions (though Banks missed the entire spring due to injury). Gallmon was a three-year starter before suffering a torn pectoral muscle last August and missing the entire 2022 season (though he stayed healthy this spring), while Voisin emerged as one of the top players on the defense. Banks, Jordan and Voisin all have experience at corner, so it’s possible all four could play at the same time in certain packages. Sophomore nickel back Tremel States-Jones, former Kentucky transfer Rickey Hyatt and former walk-on Christopher Wallace are important pieces for the future.
South Alabama opens the 2023 season Sept. 2 at Tulane.
