Up to 4 inches of rain possible in parts of Alabama this week

More rain is in the forecast for Alabama through the middle of the week, as well as isolated severe storms.

The National Weather Service thinks the southeast part of the state will end up seeing the most rain before it moves out on Wednesday. Some areas could get 3 to 4 inches, according to forecasters.

In addition, that same region — as well as most of the rest of south Alabama — will run the risk of seeing an isolated severe storm. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for severe weather for south and east Alabama on Tuesday:

The weather service said any stronger storms that develop on Tuesday could have wind gusts up to 60 mph, and a tornado or two is not out of the question. However, the overall severe weather risk is on the low side.

Storms on Tuesday, according to forecasters, will be the most likely between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Occasional thunderstorms will also be possible today across most of the state, but no severe weather is expected.

Rain will be possible off and on throughout the day today. The weather service expects the heaviest rain to come on Tuesday.

A cold front is expected to sweep out the rain from northwest to southeast starting late Tuesday. It will also bring another round of winter air.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville said a snowflake or two could briefly be possible over north Alabama on Tuesday night as the cold air arrives: “Precipitation should remain as all rain, but could not rule out a brief mix of snow within more predominate rain before it ends before daybreak Wednesday,” the weather service said in its Monday morning forecast discussion.

Temperatures will trend much colder from northwest to southeast on Wednesday as the rain moves out of the state and colder air moves in.

There are low chances for more rain over the weekend, but forecasters expect temperatures to start trending a bit higher going into next week.
