Unidentified human remains found in Opelika; death investigation underway

A death investigation is underway after unidentified human remains were found early Monday evening in Lee County, officials said.

The remains were discovered around 5 p.m. Monday in the 5000 block of Lee County Road 391 in Opelika, said Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton.

Sexton’s office sent the remains to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Montgomery Medical Facility for identification and a postmortem exam to determine the cause and manner of death.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the event leading up to the person’s death, the coroner said.
