Unexpected retailer testing out same-day delivery
In some towns, it is more accurate to measure the distance from one place to another in Dollar Generals than miles. And with the discount retailer on seemingly every block in some towns, it could seem an unlikely place to launch same-day delivery but that’s just what’s happening, according to statements made in a recent earnings call.
Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos said the retailer recently “soft launched” a same-day delivery program. It now offers the service from about 75 stores through an unnamed third-party company, CNBC reported.
Delivery will ultimately be expanded to thousands of stores, Vasos said.
On its website, customers can search if their store offers DG Delivery which promises “DG store prices delivered in as little as one hour.” Customers will be able to select a store and provide an address, built their cart and select delivery timeframe and pay and place an order. The program will also accept digital coupons and offer cash back rewards. There is no minimum order requirement or fee listed.
DoorDash already provides delivery from about 16,000 Dollar General stores but this is the first operated by the retailer itself. The Tennessee-based chain has about 20,000 locations across the U.S.
