Two people drowned Sunday afternoon in a Lawrence County pond.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident happened at about 4 p.m. in the 5100 block of County Road 222 in Hillsboro.

Witnesses said a 17-year-old chased after a dog into a pond and appeared to be struggling in the water.

His uncle then went in after him and got him to the bank. But the uncle went under and did not reemerge from the water.
