UNA’s Jacari Lane earns first-team All-ASUN honors; Taye Fields named Newcomer of the Year
Jacari Lane’s first-team All-ASUN Conference selection was one of three honors North Alabama’s men picked up on Tuesday.
Along with Lane’s honor, senior Taye Fields was named ASUN Newcomer of the Year and picked as a second-team all-conference player while Daniel Ortiz was a third-team selection.
Fresh off of a 31-point performance against Austin Peay in the ASUN Conference tournament quarterfinals, Lane became North Alabama’s all-time leading scorer at the Division I level and ranks sixth on the program’s all-time scoring list.
The Huntsville native and Lee High alum is averaging 17.3 points per game this season, which ranks fourth in the ASUN Conference, also ranking sixth in assists per game with 4.1. He was a runner-up for ASUN Player of the Year.
Fields, a fellow Lee High grad and native of Opelika, is the first UNA player to pick up ASUN Newcomer of the Year honors.
He transferred to UNA after three seasons at Missouri Western and made an instant impact, averaging 12 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game and ranks second in the ASUN Conference in rebounding.
Fields was one vote shy of being voted as defensive player of the year, with the honor going to Queens’ Malcolm Wilson, who leads the nation in blocks.
A mainstay of the program, Ortiz returned to UNA after one season at UAB and is averaging 11.7 points per game as a senior.
A Louisiana native, he’s shooting 92-for-279 (.330) from 3-point range, which ranks sixth in the ASUN Conference.
Lipscomb coach and Huntsville native Lennie Acuff was named ASUN Coach of the Year, with UNA coach Tony Pujol finishing as runner-up.
