UNA coach Brent Dearmon dips into Mobile again to add to Lions’ staff

North Alabama head coach Brent Dearmon is dipping into the Mobile area again to add to his coaching staff.

Dearmon told AL.com on Monday night that he is hiring K.J. Maye to coach wide receivers and Deeandre Ervin to coach safeties.

Maye was a star player at Murphy High. Ervin played at Fairhope.

“Anytime you can hire guys that played the position at a high level, it’s a no-brainer,” Dearmon said. “K.J. does a really good job of connecting with players. He’s been a high school coach in Mobile, so that will help in recruiting.

“Deeandre is a former player of mine. Anytime you can connect with guys who played for you or who have coached with you, that is special. I’m excited to bring both guys on staff.”

Maye spent last fall as an assistant coach at Vigor and was in contention to be the head football coach at his alma mater. He played college football at Minnesota. Ervin spent last year coaching safeties at Oklahoma Baptist. Dearmon coached him at Arkansas Tech.

Dearmon is hoping the hires not only solidify his UNA staff but also help his continued effort to recruit in his hometown.

“We are looking to sign 5-6 kids a year out of that area,” he said. “We signed 12 Mobile-area players in our three years here. I haven’t researched it, but I would bet that is among the most by any school.”
