UGA’s McClendon will honor late teammate at Senior Bowl
Georgia offensive lineman Warren McClendon has accepted an invitation to the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl, a little more than a week after being injured in a wreck that killed teammate Devin Willock.
McClendon, a starting guard for the national champion Bulldogs, announced Jan. 14 he was entering the 2023 NFL draft. Several hours later, he suffered minor injuries in the early-morning accident near campus that took the lives of Willock and Georgia recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy (a second recruiting staffer, Victoria Bowles, was severely injured in the wreck).
McClendon and Willock were roommates. Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy announced Monday that McClendon will wear Willock’s No. 77 during Senior Bowl week and in the Feb. 4 game at Mobile’s Hancock Whitney Stadium.
McClendon joins three Georgia teammates, running back Kenny McIntosh, safety Chris Smith and kicker Jake Podlesny, as confirmed participants in this year’s Senior Bowl. Quarterback Stetson Bennett is also a candidate for the game, though Nagy said Friday he was waiting to officially invite McClendon and Bennett until after Willock’s funeral, which was Saturday.
“We’re just trying to be really sensitive to that,” Nagy said. “… So we’re not going to announce anything until they’re able to grieve the loss of their teammate, and in Warren’s case, the loss of his roommate. So that’s where we’re at with the quarterback thing.”
