UGA’s Dooley back home after COVID-related hospital stay
Legendary Georgia football coach Vince Dooley is back home after a COVID-related hospital stay, he announced in a statement through the university Wednesday.
Dooley, who turned 90 in September, was hospitalized in Athens over the weekend with pneumonia and what was described as a “mild” case of COVID. The illness caused him to miss his regular “meet and greet” appearance and book signing at the UGA Bookstore prior to last Saturday’s home game with Auburn.
Dooley said he’s planning on appearing at the UGA Bookstore prior to Saturday’s homecoming game vs. Vanderbilt. He is the author of several books, including “Dooley’s Playbook: The 34 Most Memorable Plays in Georgia Football History.”
“I’m grateful for all the cards, text messages, emails and calls as well as the prayers and concerns,” Dooley’s statement read. “But I’m ready to go Saturday with my regular book signing session at the UGA Bookstore and certainly the homecoming game.”
Dooley, a Mobile native and Auburn graduate, was Georgia’s head coach from 1964-88, winning 201 games, six SEC championships and the 1980 national championship. He also served as the Bulldogs’ athletics director from 1979-2004.
