UFL Week 4: Roughnecks leave Renegades winless

The Arlington Renegades won the XFL championship last year. Now they’re the only winless team in the United Football League.

The Renegades lost to the Houston Roughnecks 17-9 on Sunday in a game between 0-3 teams.

In the United Football League’s other Week 4 games:

· The St. Louis defense blanked Memphis on two first downs in the second half and Showboats quarterback Case Cookus went out with an injury on the second series of the third quarter of the Battlehawks’ 31-17 victory on Saturday. St. Louis quarterback AJ McCarron threw two of his three touchdowns after halftime as the Battlehawks pulled away. St. Louis running back Jacob Saylors had the longest run from scrimmage in the league this season with a 57-yarder on his way to 103 rushing yards in the game.

· Injury-replacement kicker Ramiz Ahmed made his fourth field goal of the game from 46 yards out with four seconds to play to lift the Birmingham Stallions to a 20-18 victory over the D.C. Defenders on Saturday night in a game interrupted by a lightning delay of about 90 minutes. After kicking for the XFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers last year, Ahmed signed with the Stallions on Tuesday because regular kicker Chris Blewitt had a quadriceps injury.

· Playing for injured starter Chase Garbers, San Antonio quarterback Quinten Dormady completed 23-of-37 passes for 269 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Brahmas’ 19-9 victory over the Michigan Panthers on Saturday night. The San Antonio defense recorded six sacks and kept the Panthers out of the end zone until 3:19 remained.

The Arlington offense had 73 yards and was 0-for-6 on third-down snaps before it went on a six-play, 56-yard touchdown drive aided by a roughing-the-passer penalty. Luis Perez’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Deontay Burnett pulled Arlington within eight points with 5:04 left in the third quarter.

The Houston defense reasserted itself on a first-and-10 snap at the Roughnecks 39 on Arlington’s last chance. Defensive end Chris Odom strip-sacked Perez, and linebacker Gabriel Sewell Jr. recovered the football, leaving Houston to kneel out its first victory of the season.

Houston had the game’s biggest offensive play – a 44-yard completion from Reid Sinnett to Cyril Grayson in the second quarter that set up Sinnett’s 3-yard touchdown toss to Emmanuel Butler with 3:38 left in the first half. Sinnett had four first-down completions on a 70-yard touchdown drive capped by Mark Thompson 10-yard run with 8:23 left in the third quarter.

The United Football League was formed by four of the XFL’s eight teams, including Arlington, and four of the USFL’s teams, including Houston (which went by the nickname Gamblers in that league).
